I wrote this up because there's a lot of new people who have annoyed older members, and been flamed away. Hopefully this'll make things easier on newer users;
- Come here often, make posts, join the vent server, talk to people in there. Join in the Halo Games. Basically, just be active at the forum. Being active shows your interested in the little community we have here. If you can, help out wherever you know stuff. Look through threads and see if you can help out someone in need, and if you need some answers don't be afraid to post them (in the appropiate sections, of course). The biggest part about being liked here, is to be here. Often.
Get your name out, chances are within your first few posts the older members will already be talking about you and forming opinions. So it's important to make a really good first impression. Here's some ways how;
- Don't spam. Or flood posts. As in, don't just go around saying "lol", "yeah". Make sure your posts have content to them, and try to act a bit maturely when you're starting out. Once you get to be friends with some members, feel free to joke around absolutely. But it helps to show you're not some 8 year old kid spreading stupid around the forums. Spamming will just get you flamed and it'll probably drive you away. Look around, see how people act, and emulate it a bit. Don't clone somebody, but just find your way to fit in while bringing your own little bit to the site.
- Join the Official OpenCarnage Halo PC Game Nights. These are a great way to have fun with the community, play some fun matches against other people, and get to know everyone better. This is also a great way to show interest in the community and the site, and playing will help get your name remembered. And don't worry about how good you are, that's not what the games are about, they're just a way for the community to get together, play some games and have fun.
- Try to help the community. Give advice for things to fix when you come across stuff, give ideas on what we could do to make it better. But if you're going to suggest something to make the site better, make sure you have proof behind it. Don't just suggest something, prove to us how it'll be useful. Instead of just throwing out an idea, look into it, see how it can help the site and explain it. By doing some background searching and figuring out how you're advice will make the site a better place, you're showing you're actually serious about it, that you care about it enough to prove your point, and it'll show members that you're not just babbling on about something, but are actually bringing a strong idea that can help bring the forum together. And this way, you're idea is much more likely to be passed.
- Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask away, just don't go flooding the board. If you have a question about a certain feature of the site, post it in the appropriate section. If you're a modder, don't be afraid to ask how to do something.
- Share. As childish as it may sound, share anything you come across you thought was cool. Make a post linking to a neat game you found, a funny video. Maybe you came across something new modding, post about it and let us know what you did and how you did it. Maybe you got a new computer, post some pictures of it in the right section, we have a lot of people interested in that kind of stuff. The more active you are in the boards, the more likely people will have higher respect for you.
- Be ACTIVE! That means coming to the site often and staying up to date with what's going on around here. The site is constantly active, and constantly doing things. That means not only hanging out in the modding boards. That means going into the general chat discussion. We have a lot of General Discussion Boards, check into them and talk to people. It'll get your name out and people will be able to form opinions on you. Post thoughtful responses, inteligent discussions and you'll be on your way to being liked in no time.
- Don't feed grav. He may look cute, but if you throw him some of your popcorn he'll only want more.
- Don't take anything older members say with each other seriously. Most of the older and higher ranked members are friends and joke around with each other. We'll say insulting things, but it's never serious. And if we start making fun of you, roll with the punches a bit and throw some jokes back. But don't start a flame war. The last thing you want to do is create a divide between you and a respected member, or even worse members. That's something that takes a while to get rid of, and will take a lot to make people forget.
And most importantly of all, whatever you do, don't be an ATI/AMD fan. Like Tucker. Cause he's a total noob.
